Post No 2: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, ultra-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With a substantial 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.
Hard Drive and MemoryThe 120 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 512 MB) have 667 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB.
Wireless ConnectivityThe built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.
Display and GraphicsWhether you're working on a Keynote presentation or watching a movie before you catch a flight, every document, video, and photo on your MacBook will look sharp on the glossy 13.3-inch widescreen display. With pixel-perfect 1280-by-800 resolution, it's great for viewing and working with media. Video is powered by the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor, which shares 256 MB of DDR2 SDRAM with main memory. Graphics-intensive features in iPhoto and iMovie are smoother and 3D game play--from Spore to Call of Duty--is faster and more responsive. You'll get extended desktop and video mirroring, with simultaneous support of full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display--both at millions of colors

Editorial Reviews:Product DescriptionThe MacBook uses a graphics processor that economizes space in a whole new way. A traditional computer logic board contains multiple components: the CPU, two chips that control communication throughout the computer, and the graphics processor. The logic board in the MacBook contains only two components: the CPU and a graphics processor with all of the core logic built into a single chip.Open your MacBook and you're instantly greeted by glorious full screen brightness. Anything you view, including the glossy widescreen display itself, is a spectacular experience. The LED-backlit display is more power efficient. And it's mercury- and arsenic-free, so it's greener than ever.Amazon.com Product DescriptionStylishly and intelligently designed for your on-the-go digital lifestyle, Apple's MacBook is the perfect confluence of affordability, innovation, and powerful computing. You'll enjoy quick and nimble multitasking thanks to the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor--which bumps the frontside bus speed from 866 MHz to 1066 MHz--and the 13.3-inch glossy widescreen display provides the perfect combination of pixels and portability. This MacBook also features a 120 GB hard drive and an integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi LAN that provides compatibility with older 802.11b/g routers as well as the faster throughput of Apple's Airport Extreme.
Measuring 1.08 inches thin and weighing only 5.0 pounds, the MacBook cuts a slim profile on any desk (or in any backpack or briefcase). See a larger version of this imageMeasuring a mere 1.08 inches thin and weighing in at only 5.0 pounds, the MacBook cuts a slim profile on any desk (or in any backpack or briefcase). A durable polycarbonate shell in white keeps it ready for the rough and tumble of everyday life. It also offers a unique keyboard design that sits flush against the bed for a sleeker, lower profile--which means you experience a firm, responsive touch when typing. Other standard Apple "extras" includes a built-in iSight video camera and Apple's magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter, which safely disconnects when under strain.
It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser.
Other hardware features include a 24x combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a FireWire 400 port, DVI video output, and Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144 MB of shared memory.

Post No 5: How to overclock an Intel E8400 CPU to 3.6GHz with a Gigabyte mainboard and DDR2 800MHz RAM

Step1Download and install all the suggested applications. Do a google search to find them. Backup all important data as a precaution and turn off your computer.
Step2You are now ready to do the overclock. Turn on the computer and press the "Del" or "Delete" key on the Gigabyte splash screen to get into the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).
Step3 M.I.T Shot Using your keyboard, move down to the "MB Intelligent Tweaker M.I.T" feature and open. You will now see the overclocking options.Using the keyboard, change the following settings in this order:"CPU Host Clock Control" - Enabled"CPU Host Frequency (MHz)- 400"PCI Express Frequency (MHz)- 100"Performance Enhance"- Standard"System Memory Multiplier (SPD)- 2.00 (Any kind is OK, B,D, none)Leave DRAM Timing on auto for now."System Voltage Control"- Manual. Set it to 1.22500v for now.The escape to the main BIOS screen, go to exit and save changes. Your computer will reboot, and then go to start up again into your operating system (OS).
Step4 See pic below for voltage details.
Step5If the computer bluescreens (BSODs) when it tried to boot into your OS, it means that the overclock is unstable. Restart the computer, go back into the BIOS, and raise the CPU voltage a few notches, save and exit and try again. When you get into the operating system you will need to check for stability of the overclock. The idea is that higher volts= a more stable system, however higher volts also cause more damage and heat to your CPU, so the aim is to have your OC'd system stable on the lowest voltage possible, in order to keep your computer cooler and alive for longer. Generally a small overclock like this will not mean that your CPU will die after a year, so don't worry too much about it.
Step6In order to test the stability of the OC, open Realtemp which is the best program to use on 45nm CPU's like the E8400. This program will monitor the heat of the two cores while being stress tested. Normally the idle temp will be around 10 degrees higher than the ambient temp, and the load temp another 10 degrees above the idle temp. This is fine, even for the stock cooler that comes with the E8400.My computer has an aftermarket Zalman 9700-LED cooler and idles at around 34 degrees and about 55 with a full stress load.
Step7 Orthos options When Realtemp is running, open Orthos and set the following settings:Set "Test" to "FTTs", and priority 10.NOTE: Before starting the stress-testing turn off all power saving modes and screen savers on your computer as your computer may freeze or crash if it goes to sleep while being tested.Press start to start the stress test. Let Orthos run for at least an hour. Normally with low volts it will give an error almost straight away. All you have to do is keep going back into the BIOS and raising the voltage a couple notches each time, boot back into your OS, and run Orthos and Realtemp again.I had to raise my vcore from the stock 1.22500 all the way up to 1.30000v before it was finally stable. Most people don't need to go this high, but it depends on your mainboard and RAM configuration and quality.Orthos will cause the computer to reach it's max load temp in around 5 minutes of operating, so keep an eye on the temps during this time.
Step8Once you find that Orthos is not giving errors after a short amount of time, leave it running for at least 2 hours, preferably 8-12 hours, in order to do a comprehensive stress test. Doing a comprehensive test means that your CPU is tested with the program and avoids any reliabilty issues down the track, for example it might be fine doing basic stuff, but it may crash when you do more intense CPU work. It's better to do a full test now than experience a crash later.
Step9 CPU-Z specs with full load on CPU And that's about it. Once you find the perfect vcore and Orthos is run for a long time and has no errors, that means you have successfully done an overclock. 600MHz (.6GHz) isn't a huge figure, but you will find that many things will operate a little faster, especially CPU dependant programs like games, so it is well worth your time to do.If you want to check the specs, run CPU-Z and it will show all your system's details including the new speeds. On a final note, many people have OC'd their E8400 to 3.6GHz using the stock cooling, but I would strongly recommend buying a decent aftermarket cooler or "HSF" in order to keep your computer cool and happy! Zalman and Noctua make excellent HSFs!

1 Post No. EU antitrust officials raid Intel, computer retailers

European Union antitrust regulators raided Intel Corp. offices and computer retailers on Tuesday as part of an investigation into whether they have followed rules that ensure competition in the market for computer chips, the European Commission and Intel said.

Intel spokesman Chuck Molloy confirmed that the company's Munich, Germany, office had been raided and said the company would co-operate with the investigation.

European Union antitrust regulators are looking into whether Intel used its market dominance to stifle competition in microprocessors.European Union antitrust regulators are looking into whether Intel used its market dominance to stifle competition in microprocessors.

Europe's largest consumer electronics retailer, Germany-based Media Markt, said it was also raided, as was Britain's DSG group, which owns Dixons, Currys, PC City and PC World.

The surprise inspections were the EU's first major move in response to complaints from smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which alleges Intel pressed major stores to avoid computers using AMD chips.

Intel, the world's biggest chip maker, is already facing formal EU charges of monopoly abuse for below-cost customer rebates and pricing that the EU says undercut AMD and discouraged manufacturers from building computers with the smaller firm's chips.

The raids focused on the final link in the supply chain — the stores that sell computers directly to users. AMD claims a wide range of bullying tactics by Intel shut out all of the larger firm's rivals.

The EU said there was no strict deadline for deciding whether to file charges or drop the case. EU fines can go as high as 10 per cent of a company's yearly global revenue. Last year, Intel's revenue amounted to $6.98 billion.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., sells more than three-quarters of all microprocessors, the brains of computers, that use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

The EU formally charged Intel last July — six years after it first started looking at the company — alleging the company gave "substantial rebates" to computer makers for buying most of their x86 central processing units, or CPUs, from Intel.

The EU executive also accused Intel of making payments to manufacturers to get them to delay or cancel product lines using AMD chips and that it sold its own chips below average cost to strategic server customers — such as governments and universities — when bidding against AMD-based products.

Below-cost or predatory pricing may be good for shoppers in the short term, but in the EU view, it ultimately harms consumers by killing off rivals that allow more choice and innovations.

EU officials also looked at whether Intel had urged Media Markt not to sell computers using AMD chips. The chain, which is owned by German retailer Metro AG, has more than 360 stores in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Greece.

IDF Intel launched its first foray into the world of system-on-a-chip (SoC) products for consumer electronics kit in April this year. Then, at its Spring IDF conference, it launched the CE2110, an ARM-based CPU with a built-in graphics engine, memory controller and more.

At the time, Intel's Digital Home Group chief, Eric Kim, mentioned that the chip giant would next year offer an updated SoC based not on ARM CPU technology, but on its own x86 instruction set, as used in all its desktop and mobile processors.

Six months or so on, at the Autumn IDF, Intel CEO Paul Otellini put a name to the project - 'Canmore' - and said it would make its first public appearance in January 2008 at the CES show.

Like the CE2110, Canmore is aimed at TVs and set-top boxes. The current chip combines a 1GHz processing core with a memory controller; a PowerVR MBX Lite GPU; controllers for USB, SATA, PCI, smart cards and other ports and interconnects; decoders for MPEG 2 and H.264 video; digital and analogue display drivers; a transport stream handler; TV descrambling circuitry; and an AES encryption module.

Canmore is likely to contain all these elements - Otellini mentioned the chip's AV pipeline, GPU, I/O components and a security sub-system - with a low-power x86 core, possibly based on the 45nm 'Silverthorne' CPU Intel is developing for UMPCs and mobile web gadgets.

20071006-08 - building Hades - 138-3823 - CPU in box (Intel Core2Duo E6750 2.66gHz) by ClintJCL.
I did my research, and this was the most badass CPU that could be purchased without over-paying. I believe it was only released about 4 or 5 months before purchase, but Intel already had several more powerful CPUs out since, so the price had dropped a bit.

BACKSTORY: So, as mentioned before (in a 10-part series of blog posts), my trusty computer of 9 years, "Storm", died a nasty death. My secondary/kitchen computer "Hell" stepped up to bat and took Storm's place, but I still needed a new computer for our somewhat newly-built upstairs space. So I built Hades, during which I wrote another 5 blog posts. These are the pictures I took while building it.

Pentium M: Laptops Flex Their Muscles

In 2003 the market for portable PCs was booming and Intel had only two processors for them: the aging Pentium III Tualatin and the Pentium 4, whose high power consumption made it unsuitable. But a savior was to arrive from Israel: the Banias (alias Pentium M). This processor, based on the P6 architecture (the same as the Pentium Pro) had high performance and low power consumption. It even beat the Pentium 4, while consuming a lot less power. This was the processor used in the Centrino platform and it was quickly followed (in 2004) by the (faster) Dothan model. The Pentium M left its mark on the world of mobility, and the Stealey (A100) still uses the Dothan architecture (with lower frequencies and TDP).

"We think you should know that this machine is ground breaking, and we love it."

"It's the first machine in the world to have 8GB of memory as standard. It was the first machine to incorporate an Intel Quad Core Q6600 CPU."

"It is a simply stunning machine which will not be beaten on either specification or price by anyone, anywhere."

"A full 8GB of the fastest DDR2 memory ensures that games load rapidly and applications run at optimal speed."

"With a huge dedicated 512MB nVidia 8600GT PCI-E graphics card, you will be able to play any game on the market today with a level of definition and clarity that you will struggle to believe, especially with the HDTV/HDMI connector."

"Instead of just bundling a standard monitor with this system we've gone the extra mile on your behalf by giving you a 22 inch multimedia screen. We know you'll be watching lots of DVDs on this system, we've therefore made the Monitor widescreen for amazing viewing."

There's plenty more, but we think you get the idea. Computer Supermarket well and truly loves this machine.

Virtualization - Windows XP running in a VMware virtual machine on Linux

Virtualization - Windows XP running in a VMware virtual machine on LinuxA simple way to think of virtualization is to think of the simulation of a computer. Consider a computer system that runs Windows on an Intel processor. You can install virtualization software, called a virtual machine, that simulates a whole computer within Windows. The virtual computer has virtual hardware: simulated keyboards, hard drives, monitors, and so on. A virtual monitor can be displayed in a Window or fullscreen, virtual hard drives can be stored as files, and these can even be made to resize automatically and not take up any more space than is necessary. The virtual machine routes input to the virtual environment when it has focus, so the same keyboard and mouse that is used to control your computer can be used to control the virtual machine
